Porcelain or composite veneers?

Would you like to get veneers at mydent, hét mondzorgcentrum Utrecht? You can choose between two materials: porcelain or composite. Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we are happy to explain them to you.

Composite veneers

If you choose composite veneers, you and the dentist will first select the desired color. The dentist can show you the result immediately. A thin layer of the tooth will then be shaved down to make space for the veneer less is removed compared to porcelain veneers.

Before the veneers are bonded, the dentist treats the tooth with an acid and applies an adhesive layer. The soft composite material is then applied, shaped by the dentist into the right form, and hardened with a special blue light. Finally, the veneer is polished and shaped for a natural look.

Once the veneer is finished, you can immediately see the result and request adjustments if needed. This process makes the outcome highly predictable.

Porcelain veneers

If you opt for porcelain veneers, you will first select the shade during your initial appointment. The dentist will go through several color samples with you. The veneer will then be made in a dental laboratory.

During the second appointment, a slightly larger portion of the tooth will be shaved down — including part of the enamel, since porcelain veneers are thicker than composite veneers. The dentist then treats the tooth with an acid, applies an adhesive layer, and bonds the porcelain veneer in place. Once bonded, porcelain veneers cannot be adjusted.
